Damiano Caruso wins the second plase "Giro d'Italia" of 2021
Damiano Caruso was born in Ragusa on 12 October 1987 and is an Italian
cyclist with the characteristics of a passer-climber who runs for Team
Bahrain Victorious.
Professional cyclist since 2009, this year or a few days ago, he won a stage
of the "Giro D'Italia" of the 2021 edition, finishing second in the general
classification.
Caruso began his cycling career in the Ragusa team of "Libertas Ibla"
already managing to get some good placings.
Between 2006 and 2009 he competes in the Amateur Elite / Under-23 category,
wearing the uniform of the Brescia team "Unidelta-GLS" and then that of the
Pistoian team "Mastromarco".
With the "Mastromarco" team in 2008 he won the Italian Under-23 title in
Palazzago and in 2009 the Pesche Nettarine di Romagna Cycling Tour and the
Lonato del Garda stage at Girobio.
Also in 2008 and 2009 he represents Italy in the Under-23 online races of
the Varese and Mendrisio world championships, winning the tenth place in
both races.
In 2009 he obtained a contract as a professional cyclist with Fabio
Bordonali's "LPR Brakes-Farnese Vini" and the following year with the new
"De Rosa-Stac Plastic".
In 2011 he moved to the "Liquigas-Cannondale" and finished sixth at the
"Gran Premio Città di Camaiore".
He also takes part in the "Vuelta a España" races, finishing third in the
penultimate stage of Vitoria.
In 2012 he took part in the Giro d'Italia as an uphill follower for Ivan
Basso.
In that race for six days he wore the white jersey of leader of the youth
classification, then losing it to Sergio Henao in the stage with arrival in
Cervinia.
He ends the race in twenty-fourth place in the general classification.
In the same year he finished third in the "Tour of Britain" race.
His first professional success was achieved in 2013 with the "Cannondale"
jersey, winning the fifth and final stage of the "International Week of
Coppi and Bartali".
Also in 2013, he finished nineteenth in the "Giro d'Italia", in ninth place
in the "Elite National Championships", in third place in the "Tour of
Alberta", and won the climbers ranking at the "Tour of Beijing".
In 2014, however, he ranks fifth in the "International Week of Coppi and
Bartali", third place in the "Giro d'Austria" and ninth place at the "Vuelta
a España" obtaining his first place in the ten in a Grand Tour.
On August 5, 2014, his official transfer from the 2015 season to the "BMC"
team is announced.
In 2015 he participates in the "Giro d'Italia" as a ranking man with the new
team and concludes the test obtaining the eighth place.
He then disputes the "Tour de France" for the first time in his career,
winning the team time trial of the ninth stage with his teammates.
In 2016 we see him again in the "Tour de France" as a lieutenant finishing
in eighth place on the finish line.
He then competes in the line test at the "Rio Olympics" and is fifth in the
"Tour des Fjords".
In 2017 he wore the first classification jersey at the Tirreno-Adriatico
Also in 2017, despite being seventh in the standings, he did not start the
last stage of the "Tour of the Alps".
He disputes the "Tour de Suisse" as a ranking man in the "BMC", he loses his
jersey at the end of the sixth stage but remains competitive in the
following days so as to finish the final classification in second place
He takes part in the "Tour de France" as a helper to Richie Porte but
following the fall that forces his captain to retire, he is promoted to man
of his team's classification and ends the race finishing in eleventh place
in the classification.
He takes part in the "Vuelta a España" winning the opening team time trial
with his teammates.
In 2018 he won the opening team time trial of the "Tirreno-Adriatico" for
the third consecutive year, wearing the leader's jersey for one day and
finishing the race in second place.
After finishing fifth at the "Dauphiné" he tries to get an individual stage
victory in the "Tour de France", but fails.
His move to "Bahrain-Merida" is announced for the 2019 season.
He is called up by Cassani for the world championship in Innsbruck: third in
the BMC jersey in the team time trial while finishing in 64th place
In 2019 he participates in the "Giro d'Italia" and comes close to victory in
the twelfth stage, finishing second.
Also in 2019, he finished fourth in the final time trial of the "Giro a
Verona" and fifth in the Valloire stage of the subsequent "Tour de France".
In 2020 he hits his second victory as a professional in Spain at the
"Circuito de Getxo".
Also in 2020 he participates in the "Tour de France" as a helper to Mikel
Landa and comes seventh in the final time trial, finishing the French stage
race in tenth place in the general classification.
We are still in 2020 and he participates in the world championships in Imola
obtaining the tenth place.
In 2021 he participated in the "Giro d'Italia" as a wingman of Mikel Landa,
but assumed the rank of captain following the retirement of the Spanish
cyclist due to a fall in the fifth stage.
He takes his first success at the Giro in the twentieth stage that starts
from Verbania and arrives at Alpe Motta
He concludes the Corsa Rosa in second place by conquering the first podium
in his career in a great lap.
