The
wonderful Sicily with all its historic buildings and extraordinary scenarios
is transformed into France in the 1600s thanks to the visionary mind of the
great master of Oscar-winning cinema, Joe Wright.
The London-based director chooses some of the most beautiful places on our
island for his film version of Cyrano de Bergerach.
A mix of territorial beauties, a brilliant mind and a stellar cast coming
straight from Hollywood.
"Cyrano", this is the title of the film produced by Metro Goldwin Meyer with
Wolking Title Films and Mestiere Cinema. And among the producers stand out
the names of Guy Heeley, Eric Fellner and Tim Bevan. Guy Heeley has been a
producer of such films as "Summerland", "London Spy", "The Escape", "Redemption"
and "Locke". Eric Fellner is one of the partners of the British production
company Working Title Films and producer of films such as "Elizabeth", "Bridget
Jones's Diary", "Love Actually", "The Interpreter", "Rush" by Ron Howard,
"La theory of everything "," Captain Corelli's mandolin "," Johnny English
"," Everest "and many others. Executive Producer of films such as "Notting
Hill", "Fargo", "Brother, Where Are You" by the Coen Brothers, "The Soloist"
by Joe Wright. "Fellner since 2005 is part of the Order of the British
Empire, an order of chivalry with which were also awarded the Beatles and
David Bowie. Tim Bevan instead is co-founder of "Working Title Films" in
London and producer of films such as "Elizabeth", "Bridget Jones's Diary", "Captain
Corelli's Mandolin", "Johnny English", "The Italian Job", "Love Actually",
"The Interpreter", and many others.
The great Joe Wright has chosen enchanting places in our Sicily. Starting
from Noto in the province of Syracuse which hosted four months of
pre-processing and over a month or more of filming of the film, then there
are also Syracuse with the Maniace Castle on the island of Ortigia, Catania
with the wonderful Palazzo Biscari and the rocks of Etna, and to finish in
the solitary and mysterious church of San Matteo in Scicli.
The film "Cyrano" is the first musical directed by Wright and is inspired by
the theatrical adaptation written by Erica Schmidt, wife of actor Peter
Dinklage, who is also the author of the film adaptation of Wright, already
staged in Off-Holywood.
The reality the film "Cyrano" directed by Wright is based on the novel
Cyranò de Bergerac written by the French author Edmond Rostand.
Cyranò de Bergerac is a play in five acts published in 1897 and is inspired
by the seventeenth-century writer, Cyrano de Bergerac, striker of science
fiction literature.
The work was first presented in a Paris theater in 1897.
Cyranò de Bergerac is a gruff swordsman with a very long nose, poet and
writer.
His skill with the sword is legendary and his compromise-prone character
makes him rich in many enemies, whom he likes to ridicule with verses.
Cyrano is unstoppable and scary with sword in hand but his heart is tender
and he suffers for his cousin Rossana (Roxanne) with whom he is madly in
love.
One evening at the theater Cyrano humiliates an actor for daring to look at
his Rossana and challenges a gentleman who had upset him to a duel.
Following this, Rossana invites him to a secret meeting.
Cyrano thinks that the beautiful Rossana finally wants to show him her love
for her.
On the road that leads him to Rossana, Cyrano meets a pastry chef friend who
is followed by several hit men, and this is yet another opportunity for
Cyrano to demonstrate all his skill by drawing his sword.
He then goes to Rosanna ready to reveal his love for her as soon as the
woman declares herself. But the woman has something else in mind, in fact
Rossana takes advantage of the meeting and in the name of the affection that
binds the two of her declares her love for a young cadet Cristiano de
Neuvillette.
Cyrano is invited by the woman to protect Cristiano and for the affection
that binds him to his cousin and then for the friendship that will be born
between the two he will keep her promise.
Cristiano is a nice guy, honest, brave and loyal but he doesn't have the
artistic vein of Cyrano.
Cyrano tries in every way to teach the art of poetry to Cristiano who is
indisposed to it, but which would be very welcome to Rossana.
It will be Cyrano himself who dictates the verses to Cristiano under
Rossana's window and will replace him during the poetic performance during
the famous rhyme "What is a kiss".
Cristiano manages to conquer the beautiful Rossana but is hindered by the
evil and powerful De Guiche, who has lost his mind over the beautiful woman.
The war that has just broken out is a reason to remove the two lovers and so
Cristiano is sent to the front, alongside him also Cyrano.
Cyrano does not miss an opportunity to stay close to his Rossana and finds a
way in the romantic letters he writes to her, however, once again, mistaking
himself for his friend Cristiano. Every day Cyrano risks his life to get to
the front to send letters for his Rossana.
One day a carriage arrives at the cadet camp driven by a pastry chef friend
whose life Cyrano saved. The beautiful Rossana descends from the carriage,
who has arrived there risking her life to see her in love with her:
Cristiano.
Cristiano knows very well that he is not the author of the letters and
invites his friend Cyrano to express his feelings to her cousin so that she
can freely decide who to love.
Cristiano is ready to sacrifice himself for the happiness of the beautiful
Rossana and her great friend Cyrano and thus decides to volunteer for a
dangerous reconnaissance that he manages to do but returns seriously injured.
Cyrano tries to help Cristiano but by now the young man is sighing. Before
dying he asks Cyrano if he has made the gesture of telling the truth to
Rossana and who is the lucky one she has chosen.
Cyrano lies to his friend on the verge of death, saying that Rossana knows
the whole truth and that she, without any second thoughts, chose the young
Christian.
Cyrano has never said anything to Rossana and after Cristiano's death, the
beautiful young woman decides to retire to a convent.
Every Saturday for years, Cyrano goes to visit Rossana's kitchen.
But one day, on the way to the convent, the swordsman Cyrano falls into an
ambush and is seriously wounded.
With his last strength he manages to reach the convent and not miss his only
purpose in life, to meet his beloved cousin every week.
For the first time he arrives late from her woman, and invited by her to
read Cristiano's letter, Cyrano repeats it from her memory. It will be then
that the woman understands that there are too many coincidences which she
has not followed up and she finally understands that Cyrano is the man who
gave life to all her dreams but it will be too late: Cyrano dies.
The last words with which Rostand ends with the death of Cyrano de Bergerac
are: << Here rests Cyrano Ercole Saviniano, Lord of Bergerac. That in his
life it was everything and it was nothing! I'm leaving ... Sorry: she can't
wait for me. The ray of the moon, here, comes to call me >>.
We look forward to the opera brought to the stage by the legendary Joe
Wright with a stellar cast that reincarnates the most beautiful edition of
Cyrano de Bergerac.
<< A kiss - but what is a kiss? An oath a little closer, a more precise
promise, a confession that seeks confirmation, a rosy apostrophe between the
words I love you, a secret blown into the mouth instead of to the ear >>
